Today in History -- On today’s date 112 years ago, Sunday, December 6, 1908, infamous Depression-Era gangster, bank robber, murderer, & Public Enemy 1, Les...ter Joseph Gillis (1908-1934), whose alias was George Nelson, but who is better-known by the curiously-interesting nickname Baby Face Nelson, was born at Chicago, Illinois. Baby Face Nelson, who has the dubious distinction of having killed more F.B.I. agents than any other person, earned his moniker in May, 1933 after he & his gang stole $18,000 worth of jewelry from the wife of Chicago mayor William Hale Big Bill Thompson (1869-1944). Mrs. Thompson later described her attacker thusly: He had a baby face. He was good looking, hardly more than a boy, had dark hair & was wearing a gray topcoat & a brown felt hat, turned-down brim. Like his contemporary, Pretty Boy Floyd (1904-1934), Baby Face Nelson hated his nickname. On October 22, 1934, then Public Enemy 1, Pretty Boy Floyd, was killed in a shootout with Federal agents. Subsequently, F.B.I director J. Edgar Hoover (1895-1972) announced that Baby Face Nelson was now Public Enemy 1. Baby Face Nelson died young -- on November 27, 1934. Just slightly more than one month after he was promoted to Public Enemy 1, & just 30 days before his 26th birthday, he met his demise at the age of 25 when died in bed in a safe house on Walnut Street in Wilmette, Illinois from the effects of nine gunshot wounds sustained in a running gun battle with G-Men earlier that same day at the town of Barrington, Illinois in what came to be known as the Battle of Barrington. The undated photograph depicts the famous youthful-appearing visage of the infamous Baby Face Nelson.

The Bonnie and Clyde apartment was the location where the Barrow gang hid out after a series of robberies in Missouri and neighboring states. After twelve days,... neighbors reported suspicious behavior, and on April 13, 1933, the Joplin Police Department raided the apartment. Two of the police officers were killed by the fleeing fugitives. Undeveloped photographs, left behind by the gang, helped the authorities eventually stop the gang. Stolen merchandise tied the gang concretely to a robbery in Joplin during their stay there. Watch live feeds as we try to communicate with the officers that lost their lives kicking off at 7PM CST Jan 5th. www.twistedparanormal.com See more
