While it's not technically a #DetroitNeighborhood, Hamtramck is a city almost completely surrounded by Detroit. Named after Jean François Hamtramck, a French-Canadian soldier who was commander of Fort Shelby in Detroit, Hamtramck became home to German farmers in the early 1900s, during the past 30 years, the city has also become home to immigrants from the Middle East, particularly from Yemen, as well as immigrants from South Asia, predominantly from Bangladesh. The city’s motto is, A League of Nations, reflecting its history being home to many different immigrant populations over the years. 1984 was a great year for Tigers Baseball, considering they won the World Series Championship! Their official record for the season was 104 wins and 58 losses. Team manager Sparky Anderson arrived to low morale after several losing seasons, but with Anderson, the ailing Tigers’ fortunes began to change. In 1984, the team captured the hearts of baseball fans throughout the region as they opened the season with a record 35-5 start, going on to win the World Series against the... San Diego Padres in five games. Anderson was regarded just as highly as the players in this victory. The team would follow up that success by becoming American League East champions in 1987. Anderson ultimately retired from the Tigers and Major League Baseball in 1995 with 2,194 wins and a .545 winning percentage. Learn more about Anderson’s time with the Tigers here: https://bit.ly/3mxHYEE : c. 1986, from the Detroit Historical Society collection. Detroit Tigers Yearbook for 1986. Developed in the early 1900s, The Cass-Davenport Historic District is composed of four apartment buildings on Cass Avenue, Davenport Street, and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The four buildings that make up the historic district are the Davenport Apartments, Chesterfield Apartments, Aderna Court Apartments (now Wayne Court Apartments), and Naomi Apartments (now Cass Plaza Apartments). The apartment buildings in the district reflect the changes in building styles that wer...e occurring throughout the early 1900s to 1920s. Around the turn of the century, apartment buildings such as the Davenport and Chesterfield were designed to be spacious and elegant for upper and upper middle class families. The Davenport Apartments were constructed in 1905 and designed in the Beaux Arts style. The Chesterfield Apartments followed in 1911, designed in the Classical style. The Cass-Davenport Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Have you, or anyone you know, ever lived in one of these buildings?
