In the latest of our 'lockdown look-back' series, revisiting businesses we spoke to in the first lockdown - we are looking at the ongoing struggles of those who run travelling funfairs - our local showmen. MORE https://www.itv.com//lockdown-lookback-the-struggles-of-tr
I’m very pleased to have secured a commitment from the Prime Minister this evening over support for showpeople. Those who run fairs and showgrounds are one gr...oup who have suffered a substantial financial impact due to the pandemic but have perhaps not received support. Glasgow East has a sizeable and historic community of showpeople and I’m keen to make sure they are not forgotten about as we head into winter. See more
The only fair open in Britain right now is Herchers Funfair at Grant Park in Forres in the north of Scotland. Fair play lads the equipment looks fantastic. It can be done safely if only they would listen to the people who have been doing this for generations Video - Rob Holder

Shifting Identities.... In our last blogpost Fair Scotland (formally, Fair Glasgow) updated you on our efforts to ensure Scottish Showpeople were included in Scotland’s 2021 census. Writing in her blog, Fair Scotland member and social policy expert Dr. Andrea Salvona reflects on the difficulties of categorising showmen and women, and why we need to avoid simply being ‘other’.... #FairScotland #fairground #census2021 #identity #culture https://fairglasgow.wordpress.com//shifting-identities-wh/

***Sharp Shooters*** The Harris family have been in the Scottish Show Business for centuries. See here a collection of images (photos and drawings) dating back to the 1800s. The Harris' travelled throughout the UK with a pipe shooter and Harris' Grand Exhibition; see here an image depicting the backstage of the fair at Dumfries with the famous Biddle's Bridge in the distance....... #Fair #Scotland #Culture #Heritage #dumfriesandgalloway See more
Today should have seen the showmen pull in to Market Street for the Lammas Market 2020 but unfortunately Covid-19 has put a stop to it. I have put together all ...the best bits from the last 30 years of the Market Street Pull On, so sit back with your popcorn as you enjoy Access All Areas coverage. How many of the shop names and local faces do you know and remember ? See more
The White’s in Aberdeen The White's were based at the Inshes South Esplanade Torry Aberdeen in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The different White Brothers opened fairs on both the South Esplanade and North Esplanade at the same time. The two grounds are marked by the orange mark on the present day and 19th century maps seen here.... #aberdeen #seeninthedeen #scotland #heritage Images provided by Natalie Cowie Keyes.
It's not always fun on the fair....Scottish Showman were once again stopped from re-opening fairs, despite ensuring that social distancing measures and hygiene facilities being put in place. The Showman's Guild was originally given the green light for fairs in Scotland to open on the 15th of July, however the Scottish Government has since retracted, without adequate explanation and consequently, Show people wont be able to go back to business as usual alongside others in the hospitality and tourism sector. #fair #unfair
**Scottish Showmen** This image was most probably taken just before opening. The shutters are up on the stall or "joint", advertising "pastimes", all ready to welcome the first "punters" to the fair! You can see a gap between the stalls, that leads to the backstage of the fair, where the Showman "set out" their equipment and live in specialised Showman's wagons. Sad news from Blackpool this morning the Ex William Bastables Waltzer that was on the Central Pier has been destroyed by a fire during the night. This was a lan...dmark Waltzer in its time here in Scotland and was considered one of the very best. 17/7/20 Photo Dave Bear. Would just like to add that the fire started in the complex next to the Waltzer and it spread to the ride. Also the new Matterhorn ride has been damaged aswell sad day indeed.

We are filled with great sadness this morning after hearing that Raymond Gureme, survivor of the Roma Genocide and member of the French Resistance, passed away last night. It was an honour for Fair Glasgow to show Raymond the work we do, to hear all of his stories about circus life, his role in early 20th century cinema, but most importantly his bravery as a survivor and passion for his people. He was an inspiration to millions. His message was, Resist!... Rest in Peace. See more
Another incredibly talented piece by Showman, and artist Mitch Miller. An illustration depicting yard life
