- Gavin Hamilton and the First Principles of early Italian Art - Duncan Macmillan, Professor Emeritus at the University of Edinburgh, Art Historian and art critic at the Scotsman, has revealed that Scottish neo-classical artist, Gavin Hamilton (1723-1798), was one of the first painters in Europe to return to the ‘first principles’ of early Italian Art. In this essay, Macmillan explores the influence of early Italian artists Giotto and Nicola Pisano on the work of Gavin Hamilt...on and how he urged fellow artists such as Antonio Canova, Alexander Runciman and James Barry to look in the same direction. "In 1760, Hamilton's painting began the seismic changes from which modern art eventually evolved, for what his young disciples learnt from him was to go back to first principles." New acquisition: Caroline Walker's 'Study for Table Laying, Late Morning', 2020 Tomorrow sees the opening of the first solo show of artist Caroline Walker in Scotland, at the Ingleby Gallery in Edinburgh. In the lead up to this exhibition we are delighted to announce that we have recently acquired a new oil study on paper by the Dunfermline-born artist. ... The painting, a study of a larger work in the Ingleby exhibition, displays Walker's fascination with light as well as the documentation of her mother at work. The subject raises subtle questions about women’s roles, in work and life, a theme that is frequently examined by Walker through her striking, large-scale canvases. Earlier this year, Scottish Art News writer caught up with the Walker to discuss her upcoming exhibition at the Ingleby Gallery and how she came to create an entire exhibition depicting her mother in her home, carrying out her daily housework. "She has painted refugee women in London flats and hostels, housekeeping workers in hotels, women at work in nail bars or glimpsed through lighted windows at night: a tailor bent over her work, an office worker at her screen, a waitress sweeping up after her shift. But 'Janet' has brought her closer to home than she ever expected." To read more of the conversation between the artist and Scottish Art News writer Susan Mansfield, visit our website. https://www.flemingcollection.com//n/caroline-walker-janet 'Caroline Walker: Janet' is open from 3rd October until 18th December. - My Favourite Scottish Work of Art: John Byrne - Artist and playwright John Byrne discusses why his favourite Scottish painting is the much loved 'The Skating Minister', otherwise known as 'Reverend Robert Walker (1755-1808) Skating on Duddingston Loch' by Sir Henry Raeburn, painted around 1795, from the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland. "As a ‘cradle Catholic’ in Paisley where, as a precocious young boy, my mother took me to the library in the high street... and next door, to the art gallery, I ‘drank in and digested the treasures therein’, but it wasn’t until I was a grown-up that I came upon Raeburn’s painting of a Church of Scotland minister skating on Duddingston Loch, poised and serene, and a shining exemplar of his calling." Happy 100th Birthday to Alan Davie CBE HRSW RA (1920-2014) Born in Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, the son of a painter and etcher, Davie studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1937 to 1948. In Florence in the late 1940s, on a travelling scholarship from ECA, he discovered the simple solemnity of Italian 13th and 14th century art, and in Venice met Peggy Guggenheim, who in turn introduced him to the early work of the American Abstract Expressionist painters, such as Pollock, Ro...thko and Motherwell. His own Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s gave way to a highly personal vision, encompassing within an abstract framework elaborate pictographic symbols borrowed from a variety of sources. However, his long career means that he is not one to pigeonhole into a specific movement. Not only was he a painter, but also a poet, musician and jewellery designer. Depicted is an early example of his work, painted before his Italian travels and inspirations, from our collection. It shows the influence of his Edinburgh College of Art tutor, John Maxwell. To celebrate this centenary and a marvellous artist career, artist @siobhanmclaughlinstudio , a recent Fine Art graduate of @edinburghcollegeofart , is curating an exhibition for @dovecotstudios , now to open in January 2021. It will be a unique opportunity to see rarely exhibited works from private collections from each decade of Davie’s artistic life, including tapestry and rug collaborations with Dovecot Studios. We're looking forward to it! 'Alan Davie: Beginning of a far-off World.' 22nd January - 6th March 2021, Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh. Image: Still Life, Flowers on a Table, 1946. A gorgeous, decorative oil on canvas by Glasgow Boy George Henry, titled 'Autumn' held in the Paisley Art Institute Collection. Everything about it captures the essence of this season: the warm colours, the restful pose of the figure; and the downward brushstrokes mimicking the falling leaves. #OnlineArtExchange on the theme of #Autumn with Art UK. #Scottishart #Scottishartist #artfromhome #museumwithoutwalls #GlasgowBoy

#ScottishArtNews review: Lines from Scotland @dclandg @fifecontemp Fife Contemporary's touring exhibition is the first exploration of how drawing has shaped some of Scotland's most celebrated artists and designers. The exhibition spans three generations, showing the work of Scottish greats Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Elizabeth Blackadder, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Andy Goldsworthy, Lucy Skaer, Frances Walker and many others.... "The pen-pal style intimations of the title of this independently curated exhibition for Fife-based arts umbrella Fife Contemporary is a very gentle double-edged sword for the broad exploration of drawing it covers. The old-school stencil font of each label for the 23 cross-generation artists puts stylistic and symbolic faith in its craft, particularly in relation to the natural world." Read more from #ScottishArtNews writer Neil Cooper on our website, link below. The exhibition runs until 25th October at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries. https://www.flemingcollection.com//new/lines-from-scotland #Scottishart #Scottishartist #LinesFromScotland #Scottishdesign

#UnderOneSky #ImanTajik Earlier this year, artist Iman Tajik was invited by Deveron Projects to co-ordinate their annual Slow Marathon as part of an artist residency. But, as lockdown cancelled both the residency and the marathon, he was encouraged to think globally instead. His alternative online project invited people from all over the world to donate the miles they walked each day until the total reached the length of the circumference of the earth. In the pandemic, a l...ot of people were walking more, Tajik said. Some people went for daily walks, others were just able to walk in their garden. The main idea was solidarity with each other in this time of the pandemic, but I am very interested in borders and freedom of movement in my work. Many people I talk to don’t really understand the meaning of borders, or what it is not to have freedom of movement, but in this pandemic, everyone had an experience of borders being closed and movement restricted. For me, this was an opportunity to do a global project and open up a discussion about these issues. So thrilled to read the 5 star review in @the.scotsman this morning of our exhibition #theGlasgowBoysandGirls at @berwickvisualarts. Duncan MacMillan writes on a favourite work: Among the stars here, too, is a painting by Flora Macdonald Reid. Another hitherto unsung heroine of Scottish painting with a better-known brother, the painter of rural scenes, John Robertson Reid, her painting Fieldworkers shares his kind of subject. The intense light she describes through vivid col...our is quite her own, however. This is a wholly unfamiliar picture and a reminder as it continues to grow how important the Fleming Collection is for our knowledge of Scottish art. My Favourite Scottish Work of Art: Sir James MacMillan For the next in the series, the Scottish classical composer and conductor, Sir James MacMillan, shares his favourite contemporary Scottish artwork with us, by Glasgow School of Art trained painter Anne Devine. Describing the painting 'The Boatman’s Cave, Staffa', he explains his fascination with the work. "It’s the quality of light and shade in this that I find so affecting, but at the heart of it is the dark hole - a ca...ve, or is it a tomb? Who or what could emerge from this cavern?"
