Nationwide, COVID-19 is spiking out of control at a rate much worse than in the spring. It doesn’t matter how well Maryland has done over the past months if we ...fail to take this virus seriously now. Effective Friday, November 20 at 5 p.m., all bars, restaurants, and venues serving food and alcohol must close between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., except for the purposes of carryout and delivery. We have taken this action based on increasing reports that compliance with public health protocols drops dramatically late at night. Capacity at retail establishments and religious facilities will be reduced to 50%, bringing them into line with indoor dining and personal services businesses, as well as bingo halls, bowling alleys, pool halls, roller and ice skating rinks, fitness centers, and social clubs. To manage the surge on our healthcare system, the Maryland Department of Health has issued orders and guidance to prohibit hospital visitation (with some exceptions), allowing hospitals at or near capacity limits to transfer patients, and warning them to limit elective procedure admissions. Indoor visitation at nursing homes will be significantly limited and all visitors must have proof of a negative test within the past 72 hours. Testing will be mandatory twice weekly for staff and weekly for residents. We are also doubling the number of rapid response teams. This is not the flu. It’s not fake news. And it’s not going to magically disappear just because we’re all tired of it. Now more than ever, I am pleading with the people of our state to stand together a while longer to help us battle this surging virus. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarc...e heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. John McCrae 1915
