Conservation rescue efforts for the oldest artist-run space in Manila Green Papaya Art Projects Green Papaya suffered a devastating fire on June 3, 2020, leaving the 20-year-old repository in ashes and drenched from extinguishing the flames. Lopez Museum and Library is dedicating a team and its main conservation laboratory for immediate mass drying and for arresting the fast spreading mold.... Green Papaya has played a valuable role in Philippine contemporary art history and culture by providing a platform for emerging artists and experimental practices from the peripheries. What remains represents Green Papaya’s archives and rare materials from the 90s and 00s experimental art scene, contemporary performance, and media art. It also represents part of the archives of VIVA ExCon, the Philippines’ oldest art biennial, co-founded by Norberto Roldan as well. While we are able to provide first aid assistance to salvage an important part of our shared artistic consciousness, Papaya still needs further support. Happy Independence Day! .. , , As Dr. Jose Rizal was busy annotating Morga’s Sucesos de las Islas in the British Library, Marcelo H. Del Pilar under the pen name Plaridel was writing articles with the intention to sway the sympathy of Spain’s key politicians and general public to the colony’s cause. Hoping to reveal the societal ills and immense control of the friars, he penned La Soberania Monacal en Filipinas.... In the letter, Rizal offers him both praise and critique. He also confides, : , , , . May we never forget the hopes of our heroes who fought and lost their lives for our freedom. Mood. Juan Luna’s Ensuenos de amor, oil on panel circa 1880s Spanish for Daydreams of love, Luna paints a loved one in slumber in an expressive pastel composition, unravelling his emotion with immediacy. In contrast, and on the other side of the same panel, he paints a controlled and modeled study for Espana y Filipinas, a political allegory that would preoccupy Luna for many years, driving him to make at least six final versions.... The work is a rare glimpse of Luna engaging with two conflicting artistic movements, captured on a single object: impressionism and realism. Impressionism at the time, with its liberation of brush and play with light, faced harsh opposition from the realist studio convention of the academy. , It has been both challenging and eye-opening to navigate what is now called the ‘new normal.’ With most of us caught off-guard and unprepared for a lockdown, we have embraced different ways of coping during this crisis to prioritize the safety of our families and communities. At this point we have allowed ourselves some time to process what has happened around the world and zoomed in on what may be upon us here in the Philippines. It is our re...sponsibility as individuals to do our partto keep our health on check, care for our families and take precautionary measures to ensure we are helping flatten the curve of COVID-19. But on a larger scale, we are also called to be of service, however that may mean for each of us especially for our Frontliners. My father and our Chairman Emeritus, Oscar M. Lopez, has always said, . . Taking this message to heart together with deep passion to contribute meaningfully to our local arts and culture community, we at Lopez Museum and Library aim to serve as a platform for conversations and an enriching space to cultivate newfound ideas and perspectives brought about by the pandemic. Our commitment towards creating a dialogue with history continues, as we witness the significant events around us as they unfold. You are invited to join our community at Lopez and Museum and Library, as we introduce new programs, starting with a series called Reflections. Let us come together with our local artists, cultural institutions and thought leaders, while focusing on the common goal of uplifting our audiences during these challenging times. Let us spark a movement and discourse in our artistic community, while fostering nation-building through Philippine history, arts and literature. More than ever, we must keep our Filipino spirit, values and heritage alive. Sincerely, - See more

We all deserve to see classic films. A mantra that resonated with us, as we finished the first series of the Lopez Arts Initiative’s pioneer project that celebrates Classic Filipino Cinema. The vision is clear as we bridge generations and strive to keep the Filipino heritage alive not only through the restored films but also through valuable pieces of history our community is able to see and experience. Our big thanks to those who join...ed us in reminiscing and learning more about Karnal, Mr. Manolo Abaya, Cinematographer and Husband of Marilou Diaz-Abaya, their son @marc_abaya, @joeltorre_ who played ‘Goryo’ and Ms. Fiel Zabat, the movie’s Production Designer. Manolo Abaya, Cinematographer an...d husband of the late Film Director and Leo Katigbak of ABS-CBN Film Restoration will also join the conversation. Film is memory. -Nick Deocampo Each week we foster community-inspired gatherings and during this 2nd installment of our Classic Filipino Cinema series, we welcomed a diverse mix of cultures, perspectives and stories around the Golden Age of Philippine Cinema. Through these classic films and archived collections, today’s generation is given a vignette of the decades that passed while those who lived through the era feel... a sense of nostalgia. To cap our #ThrowbackThursday, the family of late Tony Santos, Sr. graced us with their presence during the screening. Tony Santos played the character of Jose, the patriarch of the family in "Biyaya ng Lupa with Rosa Rosal as his wife Maria. #LopezArtsInitiative #FilipinoCinema #PineappleLab #FringeFestival #ABSCBNFilmRestoration #SagipPelikula #phcinema100 #LVNFilms #BiyayaNgLupa @ Pineapple Lab See more
