During 2019 McCahon House alumni artist Judy Millar painted a very large work titled ‘Eleven’, thinking it could be the belated eleventh painting for the 10 Big Paintings show held at the ACAG in 1971. Colin McCahon was included in that show of paintings by 10 male artists. Having had exhibitions in Europe cancelled this year, Judy is touring her work around the smaller cities of Aotearoa. What a week for McCahon House’s most recent alumni artist Ana Iti who has fantastic new work in two shows opening this week. On Saturday, ‘Ana Iti: Kimihia te hua’ will open across @tetuhiart billboard locations - Reeves Road Billboards, Parnell Station Billboards, & the new Digital Billboard Ana introduced us to Te Pipiwharauroa: he kupu whakamarama, a reo Mori newspaper in circulation between 1899 and 1913, during her McCahon House residency earlier this year.... Over the winter and during Tmaki Makaurau’s two Covid-lockdown periods, Iti spent time with these texts, piecing together each kupu (word) line by line, mainly using Google Translate. Kimihia te hua, the billboard series’ title, refers to processes of translation, and more generally to the reader’s search for meaning, for a specific ‘shape’, tone or form, in order to navigate a text which is new to them. Also on Saturday, Ana Iti’s ‘Takoto’, the 2020-21 North Terrace Sculpture Commission for Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tmaki @aucklandartgallery will be open in conjunction withToi T Toi Ora: Contemporary Mori Art. Steve Carr’s McCahon House artist edition ‘CARR: Steve Carr with Nathan Haines and Samuel Holloway’ 2020is a 10 Lathe Cut Record made in collaboration with local musicians Samuel Holloway and Nathan Haines. Steve hastaken McCahon’s text from The Northland Panels and "Gate II and inputted them into an online algorithm, creating a set of instructions. Composers Haines and Holloway were tasked to create a piece of music each from the predetermined algorithm.... With a prolific output ranging from electronic dance based music to fully analogue quartet jazz, Haines was the supreme choice to respond to "The Northland Panels". Whereas Holloway’s amalgamation of music and philosophy - variously concerned with notions of musical complexity and perception was the perfect accompaniment to "The Gate Series". McCahon’s works are as enigmatic as the inscrutable musical cryptography; this translation acts as a way of transporting veiled messages through some 'logical' relationship and bringing them to light. Steve Carr We celebrated the launch of Steve’s edition with a lovely evening hosted by supportive McCahon House partner Jennie Hu
