Mid America Flight Museum was honored this past weekend to have some very special veterans spend a few days with us. Several Vietnam War Era Helicopter pilots and crew members did a little flying with us in the museum’s UH-1H Helicopter. The crew Chief and two pilots who flew our very same Huey with D Troop, 3/5th Cavalry in Vietnam, were reunited to take to the sky together once again. Other members of D Troop were also on hand who had flown or crewed on Cobras and Loache...s with the squadron. Scott Urschel and Bruce Haffner captured some stunning air to air video of several flights. With calls signs such as "Long Knife" (Hueys), "War Wagons" (Loaches), and "Crusaders" (Cobras), D Troop took the fight to the enemy, time and time again. It was great to have representatives from each on hand. The brave selfless actions of these and other veterans like them, are the main reason we can enjoy the freedoms we have today.

At Mid America Flight Museum. The MAFM UH-1 landing with pilot John Sorenson who flew combat missions in Vietnam in this very aircraft at the controls. He is accompanied by David Riley who was the exclusive crew chief of this very aircraft during its service in Vietnam. MAFM doing what they do best. We are honored to have several members of D Troop 3/5th Cavalry with us this morning. A great reunion for a few of our cherished vets.

As teased yesterday, the crew in Urbana, Ohio has completed the move of the 1944 DH-89A (DeHavilland Rapide) that was acquired from the National Museum of the U...nited States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. The wings were moved in July, and yesterday we got the rest thanks to a large crew of volunteers that included Billy and Andrew who joined the fun all the way from Texas. The goals were simple, disassemble the airplane, crate the nacelles, move the airplane, unload the airplane, do not hurt the airplane or ourselves. All goals were accomplished in one long rewarding day. The hanger in Urbana continues to grow with more unbelievably rare and cool aircraft that deserve the love and attention that Mid America Flight Museum can provide. Thank you to all that helped bring her home. See more

We had a long and productive Workday/Funday at MAFM North in Urbana Ohio Saturday. The team checked some large hurdles off the list on the Travelair 6000 during a beautiful fall day at Grimes Field. We also had a mother and son working on the airplane that came all the way from Wisconsin! Ended the work day with a couple foliage tours In Doug Smith's Stearman while the low country boil was being prepared, complete with a custom MAFM cherry cobler a'la mode! Enjoying the meal outside the hangar was a great way to cap off a day of aviation fellowship.

I will share it every year. This exact aircraft was sunk during Pearl Harbor, and it remained in the water for 40 years. It was then pulled out, restored for 7 years, and we still fly it now.
