Tomie Ohtake (Brazil, b.1913 d.2015) Untitled, 1994 Engraving / etching 2/30, 23 x 15" (image) Collection OAS Art Museum of the Americas... Today’s #AMAPapermakers work is Untitled, by the Japanese-Brazilian artist Tomie Ohtake. In 1936, Ohtake was visiting her brother at Sao Paulo when the first events of the Second World War’s Pacific Theatre made her decide to stay in Brazil. Although she previously had an artistic formation in Japan, it was until 1952 that she started a prolific career in the cultural circuits of Brazil. Ohtake cultivated a close association with other Japanese-Brazilian based on the mutual interest on lyrical abstraction and the artistic exchanges between Japan and the Americas, embodying a second generation of the Seibi Group with Tikashi Fukushima, Manabu Mabe, and Flavio-Shiró, among others. Untitled exemplifies the formal constants present in Ohtake’s paintings. From a monochromatic background emerges a second color surface that shapes diverse textures: from ethereal scumbles to dense brushstrokes that trace circular lines, resembling the calligraphic movement of the Japanese traditional art of writing in large canvases. To Ohtake, a painting captures a movement: it could be before, it could be after. Printmaking is an ideal medium to register this sense of immediacy through a combination of controlled technique and serendipity, as the bite of the acid in the zinc plate achieves the unique tonalities and expressiveness of Ohtake’s artistic production. #Papermakers #AMAPapermakers #AMAatHome #AMAenCasa

AMA would like to wish a happy birthday to Uruguayan abstract artist, painter, potter, sculptor, muralist, writer, composer and builder Carlos Páez Vilaró (Montevideo, 1 November 1923 Punta Ballena, 24 February 2014), who would have been 97 years old yesterday. The colorful Roots of Peace mural, painted in 1960, and restored in 2001-2002at 530 feet one of the longest murals in the world and is nearly as long as the nearby Washington Monument is high, runs underground the O...AS campus next to the National Mall and has served as a reminder to OAS diplomats and staff of their mission to work towards peace and harmony throughout the Americas. It was conceived in ten large tonal and thematic areas, without clear demarcation, suggesting the spiritual unity that bonds the peoples of the Americas without suppressing unique differences. Happy birthday, Carlos Páez Vilaró. #CarlosPaezVilaro #RootsOfPeace #PaezVilaro #UruguayanArt #Uruguay #AMAatHome #AMAenCasa #OASart #AMAart See more

By blending or harmonizing images, artists are connecting three pachas, opening passages among three realms that they use to move freely between these pachas, and in doing so unveil their role as semi-gods like the Moon and the Lighting according to Incan beliefs, reinforcing the artist mobility through social classes and their permanence in time confirm our mortal condition. In concluding #BuildingDialogs, AMA encourages viewers to challenge their perceptions and bias by pa...iring differing artworks and enjoying the results. First pairing: Gesche Würfel pairs her series Basement Sanctuaries in dialog with Thomas Kellner’s Brasilia, 50 Years of Utopias. Second pairing: Alejandra Delgado Uría pairs her Fantasmagorias in dialog with Gesche Würfel‘s Basement Sanctuaries.

New syntheses, unknown mere moments ago, symbolize the blend that can be reached in a sincere, open conversation free of stereotypes and personal attacks. The unknown is what artists strive for, as Rebecca Solnit describes in her book A Field Guide to Getting Lost: Certainly for artists of all stripes, the unknown, the idea or the form or the tale that has not yet arrived is what must be found. It is the job of the artist to open doors and invite in prophecies, the unknown, ...the unfamiliar; it’s where their work comes from, although its arrival signals the beginning of the long process of making it their own. First pairing: Thomas Kellner pairs Gesche Würfel’s series Basement Sanctuaries in dialog with Alejandra Delgado Uría’s Fantasmagorias. Second pairing: Alejandra Delgado Uría pairs Gesche Würfel’s series Basement Sanctuaries in dialog with Brad Temkin’s Rooftop.
