It's ArtSmart: Indiana Monday! These two portraits were painted by John Hegler in 1853. Portraits are important as records for future generations. LEARN BY READING After Indiana became a state in 1816, Hoosier artists became more in important because their skills were in greater demand. There was an emerging refinement as people now wanted art for their homes. ... Crafts, such as quilts, were popular for their usefulness as well as their beauty. Individuals also hired artists to paint portraits, landscapes, streetscapes and still lifes. Architecture and photography added to the emerging interest in culture. Although John Hegler was born in Switzerland, he came to the United States in 1831 and to Lafayette in 1849 where he became the city’s first important painter. These are portraits of Dr. Turner Welch and Esther Welch. Dr. Welch had been a surgeon in the War of 1812 and settled in Lafayette with his wife and children. He was one of the first physicians on the great Wea Plains. Portraits were important now as records for future generations. LEARN BY DOING Step 1: Choose one of Hegler's portraits and think about why he painted that person. Next, choose a person from Indiana history research their life. Make a sketch of the person with a felt-tip marker in one color. Add as much detail and expression to the person as possible. Make the sketch large enough to touch all four edges of the paper. Step 2: Finish the drawing with pastels or tempera paints. Use your research to determine how people might have dressed and pay special attention to hats, hairstyles, and clothing. Complete the portrait by adding an appropriate background scene. Step 3: Write an article about your chosen historical figure as it might have appeared in a newspaper of the day. He experiences lots of adventures: Somtetimes he rides a bull on his back, sometimes he fights with a huge snake, sometimes he rocks on the crescent of the moon or stands serenely on a pedestal. The sculptor and his daughters give insights into the work of the artist that have never been heard before. They accompany the young listeners through the exhibition in a charming and child-friendly manner: In a varied way they tell how the artist works and why he draws faster than he can think. The Toniebox including the figure, lovingly designed by Balkenhol for the exhibition, is available free of charge at the museum cash desk on presentation of an official identification document. _______________________________________________ Pregnant Woman - By: Anonymous Artist _______________________________________________ Created in the 1850’s for a series entitled ‘The Golden Clouds’, this erotic shunga print from an anonymous artist depicts a pregnant woman having intercourse with her husband. She sits on his lap while he holds tightly to her swollen belly. The lovers were depicted in a dreamlike setting, inside separating gold coloured clouds. Edo-period ...shunga varied widely in its depictions of sexuality. As a subset of ukiyo-e it was enjoyed by all social groups in the Edo period, despite being out of favour with the shogunate. Shunga was probably enjoyed by both men and women of all classes. Superstitions and customs surrounding shunga suggest as much; in the same way that it was considered a lucky charm against death for a samurai to carry shunga, it was considered a protection against fire in merchant warehouses and the home. From this we can deduce that samurai, chonin, and housewives all owned shunga. In addition, almost all ukiyo-e artists made shunga at some point in their careers, but often unsigned, or under hidden signatures and pseudonyms.
