Cod Placers were extremely experienced and knowledgeable workmen, responsible for the accurate placement in the oven of the Saggars. Saggars were a container to protect the pottery from being damaged by heat, flames, ash and corrosive gases whilst in the bottle oven. Once the Cod Placers along with the Placers filled the kiln, the Fireman would then have to adapt the firing process to suit where the Saggars were placed and play extremely close attention throughout. ...
