Our ‘object of the week’ is this incomplete post-medieval copper alloy pocket sundial or ring dial, dating to the 17th or 18th century. British Summer Time ends in the UK this weekend on Sunday 25th October and the clocks will go back an hour, so this sundial is the perfect object to highlight from the collection! It consists of a strip of metal, formed into a ring or band and inside there are two bands of numbers, in order to tell the time. A sundial is a device that indica...tes time by using a light spot or shadow cast by the position of the Sun, on a reference scale. As the Earth turns on its polar axis, the sun appears to cross the sky from east to west, rising at sun-rise from beneath the horizon to a zenith at mid-day and falling again behind the horizon at sunset. Sundials have been invented independently in every major culture and became more accurate and sophisticated as the culture developed. A sundial uses local solar time. Before the coming of the railways in the 1840s, local time was displayed on a sundial and was used by the government and commerce. Before the invention of the clock, the sundial was the only source of time, and after the invention, the sundial became more important as the clock needed to be reset regularly from a sundial - as its accuracy was poor. This object was donated by metal dectorist, Devin Hopper. #museumofarchaeologydurham #museumofarchaeology #objectoftheweek #postmedieval #sundial #clocksgoback #britishsummertimeends #metaldetectorist #copperalloy #archaeology #durhamuniversitycollections #durhamuniversitymuseums #durhamuniversity #museumfromhome #lockdownmuseum

Don’t forget to set your clocks back tonight! This elaborate golden clock from our collection was made by James Cox c. 1780. Cox was a British jeweller and goldsmith best known for creating automata and mechanical clocks including the Cox timepiece, the Peacock Clock and the Silver Swan. The Silver Swan, built by Cox in 1773 and which is now exhibited in @TheBowesMuseum, can raise its neck and turn its head. It still functions today and is demonstrated daily.... #AshmoleanMuseum #Ashmolean #Museum #Art #Culture #MaterialCulture #History #InstaHistory #InstaMuseum #Object #Clock #TimePiece #ClocksGoBack #JamesCox #Gilt #SilverSwan #Antiquities #London #Oxford
