We are pleased to share that past-exhibiting artist Daniela Comani has generously donated It Was Me Diary.1900-1999, 2002/2007 to the University Fine Art Collections. This work is an iteration of the large scale installation included in the exhibition Courier in 2010. Written in the first person, Comani has typed an outsized diary consisting of 365 entries, each a reference to an event that occurred in the twentieth century including wars, assassinations, kidnappings, nation...al disasters, discoveries, inventions, fashion firsts and entertainment debuts. I took part in the exhibition ‘Courier’, which was curated by Corinna Ripps Schaming, where my work ‘It Was Me. Diary 1900-1999’ was on display at the University Art Museum in Albany in 2010. My piece, It was me. Diary 1900-1999’ is a work about the history of the 20th Century and is a text-based image with typewriter font (118 x 236 inch). I was very happy when I received the catalogue of the exhibition. I loved the cover with the title ‘Courier’ on top of the image of an old typewriter. I also found that the selection of artists worked very well together, and still fondly remember this exhibition. I later made an edition of this work on a smaller scale (36 x 71 inch), which I donated to the Museum in 2020. -Daniela Comani To read about other Collections updates, see the link below! Christmas is traditionally the time for entertainment. So ‘Remember When’ has stepped back to look at what was on offer in Oldham 50 years ago. For panto fans the Coliseum was showing Cinderella with Ann Kirkbride playing the Fairy Godmother. If it was a film you fancied, then the ABC was showing One Hundred and One Dalmatians; while the Odeon had Oliver; and the Roxy in Failsworth was showing Alice in Wonderland. To cater for dancers and music lovers there was a whole pletho...ra of clubs offering an array of local talent. The Candlelight Club’s cabaret stars were ‘Tender Emotion’, George Roper, Tina Jane and Paul Stevens. At the Cat’s Whiskers you could meet the club’s costumed characters with ‘The Next of Kin’. While the Caribbean Club in Robson Street offered entertainment with ‘The Britons’, Joanne Kent and the Tony Ellis Trio. If it was the exotic you were after, then there was the Finlandia Restaurant and Saddleworth Sauna in Uppermill. Here you could spend Christmas in what were described as ‘Luxurious Finnish Surroundings’. We're a little too young to remember what it was like to spend Christmas in Oldham in 1970-71.
