Exciting news!!!! We are VERY happy to share an important announcement with all of you! We have received funding for the launch of Phase 1 of the boardwalk replacement project! As many of you know, our 1/2 mile boardwalk was an aging structure when it sustained severe damage during Hurricane Irma. Unfortunately, the destruction and weight of the fallen trees damaged the structural integrity so severely that complete replacement became necessary. This same unfortunate fate be...fell the independent bridge portion over Crowley Creek, unique in that it is spring fed, full of wildlife and never dry. It is truly a sight to experience. Thanks to the guidance of Ms. Jackie Barron and the generosity of the Mosaic Florida Operations, we will be able to fully replace the independent bridge and begin demolition of the existing primary boardwalk structure. Additionally, we will complete a painted museum exhibit view from the bird tower of the marsh and a new natural history exhibit that will work in conjunction with the boardwalk! Replacing the bridge effectively restores access to the bird tower until the rest of the boardwalk is funded and replaced (phase 2). We are so grateful for this grant and hope that this positive step forward will help us continue to get donated funding to complete phase 2! Stay tuned! #crowleymuseumandnaturecenter #boardwalk #Mosaic #grants #nonprofit #nature #mosaicfloridaoperations See more

October is LGBTQ History Month! As we celebrate and recognize this history, we want to share the National Park Service’s resource page on LGBTQ history and heritage! There, you can explore National Parks related to LGBTQ history like the National AIDS Memorial Grove, read through the Stonewall Storytime to learn more about the pivotal Stonewall Uprising in 1969, or sit with the LGBTQ Heritage Theme Study and appreciate this extensive study of LGBTQ history as it relates to di...fferent themes, people, and places, which ultimately sets us up in a better position to understand and preserve LGBTQ history and heritage. Spend some time to explore the fantastic resources on this page! You can check them out here: https://www.nps.gov//tellingallamericans/lgbtqheritage.htm Happy LGBTQ History Month! #PreservationThroughPartnership #STLPG #NPS #HPF #HistoricPreservation #Grants #LGBTQ #Pride

Today is the anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966! This critical preservation policy has since guided the field of historic preservation, including our work at the State, Tribal, Local, Plans and Grants Division! The NHPA serves as the foundation for our grant programs: Tribal Heritage Grants, African American Civil Rights Grants, Disaster Recovery Grants, Underrepresented Community Grants, Save America’s Treasures, Paul Bruhn Historic Revitali...zation Grants, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Through these programs, we offer assistance and guidance to states, tribes, local communities, educational institutions, and others. We are proud to support the preservation work taken up by so many folks to carry on the mission of the NHPA and we look forward to continue supporting these endeavors for future generations! Continuing our celebration of Latinx Heritage Month, we’re highlighting a recent recipient of our #URC grant-- Utah State History and their project, Survey and Nomination of Latinx Properties in Utah. With this grant, the Utah State Historic Preservation Office will undertake survey and nomination efforts related to Latinx history in the state! Today, Latinxs are the largest minority in Utah and their history dates back a few centuries. Yet, the Utah Historic Preservation O...ffice has recognized that very few of the National Register listings in their state have even touched on this long Latinx presence. This project will help address this drastic underrepresentation. The survey efforts of this project will explore this long history and identify sites that represent the community’s history and culture in the area. With the significant research that comes out of the survey, the Utah Historic Preservation Office will be able to submit National Register nominations for one of these sites. This important work will lead to a recognition of the experiences of Latinxs in Utah and a deeper understanding of this history. Additionally, any and all National Register nominations that result from this research will be a fantastic contribution to the National Register, making it more representative of the many narratives of American history. We look forward to seeing where this project goes! September ends today but Latinx Heritage Month keeps going! The National Park Service has a great resource page on this month’s celebration and significance. It offers us the opportunity to appreciate the history of Latinxs while also recognizing the ways in which NPS and its partners are working together to increase the representation of Latinxs now and in the future. Read about the intersections of race, religion, and colonialism that took place at Spanish missions across t...he Southwest in the Spanish Missions Travel Itinerary. Spend some time looking at the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument to learn more about injustices farm workers have faced and the movement Chavez helped lead to fight these injustices. And don’t forget to check out the article on Dolores Huerta, who led the movement alongside Chavez and has continued to live a life of critical activism. Take a look at the Spotlight on LHIP (Latino Heritage Internship Program) to see how NPS and the Environment for the Americas are working together to support young Latinxs looking to start their careers in NPS and increase the workforce representation of this underrepresented group. You can also read articles by LHIP interns and fellows as they chronicle their experiences in the program. There’s so much more to explore on the page and we hope you enjoy these resources as we continue celebrating Latinx history and culture! EMERGENCY RELIEF FOR ARTISTS #forimmediaterelease :: Atlanta Contemporary proudly announces our inclusion in The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts expansion of its Regional Regranting Program. TheNexus Fund: Emergency Relief, in this first year, will give $1,000 to... support 60 self-identifying visual artists. In order to ensure that artists of every ethnicity, race, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability status, and socioeconomic class have access to this fund, Atlanta Contemporary will work with new and established partners to reach communities that have been historically underrepresented. Applicants are not required to use funds for a project rather, the unrestricted $1,000 may be used to cover costs associated with living during these unprecedented times. Due to the overwhelming need for financial support, we ask thatapplicantsself-monitor as the Nexus Fund willnot be able to support everyone who applies. Applications open November 1, 2020 with funds disbursed December 16, 2020. The blind application process will be led and managed by Program Coordinator, Nisa Floyd and supported in part by Emma Blessing, Visitor Services Coordinator. About the Nexus Fund Founded by artists for artists, Atlanta Contemporary was built upon the principles of engaging in experimentation and risk-taking through exhibitions, programming, and support of working artists. The Nexus Fund expands upon the ethos of these early days. Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities! Proclaimed by the United Nations in 1992, this day aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. As we observe this day, we’d like to highlight some recent work done to make historic buildings more accessible and AD...A compliant. In 2018, Howard University was a recipient of a #HBCU grant to assist with ADA accessibility modifications at the Founders Library. Some of the modifications in this project include an ADA compliant ramp at the main entrance of the building, modifying five existing bathrooms to be ADA compliant, providing automatic door operators to the existing entry door and other interior doors, and modifying an existing elevator to be ADA compliant. Take a look at the two pictures below for a view of the main entrance of the Founders Library. The Founders Library was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2001. To read more about the history of the Founders Library and Albert Irving Cassell, the architect behind this building as well as many others on campus, check out: https://library.howard.edu/c.php?g=396443&p=2694174.
