Barry Art Museum’s FREE Fall Lecture Series featuring internationally renowned Sculptor Karen LaMonte is live now. She will be discussing her journey and sculptures in marble, iron, bronze and glass. ________________________- Karen LaMonte began her artistic career in 1990, following her graduation from the Rhode Island School of Design. LaMonte traveled to Prague in 1999 on a Fulbright scholarship to work in the world-class Czech glass casting workshops. During her Fulbright... year, she made her first life-size work, Vestige, a glass dress that suggests an absent wearer by revealing the form of a body. This ongoing series of sculptures are a re-invention of the traditional portrayal of the nude, an aspect that has become more pronounced as LaMonte works with live models to build her forms. The Rape of Prosperina (Persephone). Gian Lorenzo Bernini. 1622-1623. Marble. Galleria Borghese. @galleriaborgheseufficiale I'm back in Rome so it's only fitting that I post a history doggo that I obsessed over during my visit to the Galleria Borghese earlier in the month. In Greek myth, Hades swooped down in his chariot, grabbed Persephone and carried her off to the Underworld. When the goddess of the harvest, Demeter, heard that her daughter had been abducted, she destroye...d the crops and fields while searching for her. This caused a famine and Zeus intervened and sent Hermes to bring Persephone back. Little did they know, however, that Persephone had been enjoying some tasty snacks in the underworld, such as pomegranate. But, naughty naughty because those who eat the snacks of the Underworld can never leave and the gods were forced to find a compromise. They agreed that Persephone could inhabit the Earth for six months and the Underworld for the other six. This myth is often connected to the seasonal change from summer to winter. Bernini captures the moment that Persephone/Prosperina is taken into the Underworld. The circular way that Bernini has framed the sculpture (which my meagre photography skills could not capture) forces you to walk around and around it - as though you are also being drawn into the Underworld. Cerberus, the loyal hound of Hades, is at the base, guarding the entrance to the Underworld and welcoming its new, albeit terrified, resident. I think that Cerberus is an important part of the sculpture's narrative as it grounds the scene and reinforces its Underworld context.
