Legendary soprano Maria Callas ( ) was born in New York City on this day in 1923. The dark-eyed diva apparently dyed her hair blonde for this portrait by Angus McBean. The photographer recalled the occasion: "At one point I suggested that Miss Callas should put on some of the jewelry she had taken off.
