Artist Statement: My work is a constant inquiry into human behaviour and its context. I work with themes around gender, identity, colonial subjugation, wealth and debt. Additionally, my art pieces reflect my past - where I use traditional fabric material and text from old books. Death cultivates visibility - what has disappeared is the loudest that calls for us. As I walk and interact with people in the streets of Harare, I talk to people, In a process of trying to understand identity. In this process, I have learnt to relate my own experiences to those of the people I meet, thus, gaining an understanding of self. About Baba Vedu Ladi: In the art work I look at the role of a father figure that of protection, security, support and love. In traditional Shona culture, the girl child is confined in the kitchen with mother. My work aims to showcase a different narrative, that of the girl child who is encouraged to be anything she wants to be, not only by her mother, but her father as well. He breaks from the traditional character that Shona fathers have many times played that of leaving the raising and support of daughters to their mother, to become a care-giver, confidant and support structure for his daughters. In the art work the father, Ladi, is talking a walk with the girls. The umbrella signifies protection and security, while the girls show their talents to a supportive father.
