Gardner, Byron (1930-1992, Oregon) untitled - Landscape, 1956 oil on canvas 43 1/2" x 59"... DM to Purchase. Byron James Gardner (1930-1992) was one of Oregon's leading abstract expressionist painters of the 20th century. He was born in Portland, OR and studied painting with Louis Bunce at the Museum Art School (now PNCA) from 1948-1952. Gardner then went to New York in 1953 to study at the Brooklyn Art Museum. While in New York, Bunce introduced Gardner to Jackson Pollock and the abstract expressionist movement. In 1954, Gardner studied art at the Mexico City College, admiring the work of the Mexican muralists. But it was abstract expressionism and his discovery of Jackson Pollock which would decisively influence and shape the timely art he would go on to make in Portland in the 1950's and 1960's. In the 60’s and 70’s, Gardner’s interest in falconry influenced his paintings, and in the 80's, Gardner returned to realism and landscape painting, taking a particular interest in portraying the high desert country of Oregon, Utah, New Mexico, and Nevada. Gardner made many other contributions to the Northwest art scene throughout his lifetime. He taught art at Portland State University (1967-92), and also taught at the Catlin Gabel School. He was also involved with the establishment of the Portland Art Museum's Rental Sales Gallery in 1959. Gardner exhibited widely throughout the Northwest, including a one-person show at the Portland Art Museum in 1959. His work is held in the collections of many museums including the Portland Art Museum, Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon, as well as many prominent private collections. #ByronGardner #OregonArtist #OregonArt #NorthWestArtist #NorthWestArt #PNWArt #OriginalArt #FineArt #MichaelParsonsFineArt #DowntownPortlandArtGallery #PDXArtGallery #FineArtGallery #BuyOriginalArt #BuyHistoricArt #ArtCollectors #CollectOriginalArt #RegionalArt #PortlandArtCollectors #MidCenturyModern #NWModernism #AbstractExpressionism #ActionPainting #Louis Bunce #Jackson Pollock #MuseumArtSchool #PNCA #PortlandStateUniversity #PortlandArtMuseum #HallieFordMuseumOfArt

Amanda Snyder (1894-1980, Oregon) Rooster oil on board 21 3/8" x 17 1/4"... DM to Purchase. A bright, lively, and charming rooster painting by iconic master artist Amanda Synder. This piece would fit nicely in any Oregon art collection, especially among country or farmhouse themed decor, given that roosters and chickens are totally hip these days. Amanda Snyder had an aptitude for art from a young age. She was primarily a reclusive and dedicated self-taught artist, who liked the rough texture of many layers of paint softened by scumbling and independently developed the use of heavy black outlines (common with the French painter Rouault). In 1916, she married and moved from Roseburg to Portland with her husband and soon attended classes at the Portland Museum Art School (1917). She befriended several of Oregon’s leading artists, especially Charles Heaney and CS Price who influenced her work. Snyder produced hundreds of drawings, paintings, and woodcuts, primarily portraits and still lifes, with a style that changed over the years from realistic through impressionistic to the increasingly abstract. Snyder was an accomplished artist. She had 32 solo exhibits in her lifetime, and her works are in numerous collections including: Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, Portland Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum, Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Reed College, and the Oregon Historical Society. #AmandaSnyder #WomanArtist #OregonArtist #PNWArt #NorthWestArt #Painting #HistoricArt #OriginalArt #FineArt #MichaelParsonsFineArt #PortlandArtGallery #PDXArtGallery #ArtForSale #FineArtGallery #ArtCollectors #ArtForEveryone #AffordableArt #MuseumArtSchool #PNCA #PortlandArtMuseum #OregonHistoricalSociety #HallieFordMuseumOfArt #SeattleArtMuseum #Rooster #CountryDecor #FarmhouseDecor
