GEOLOGY ON THE FLINT HILLS TRAIL. This month, we're exploring how geology impacts Franklin County History with help from the Kansas Geological Survey. The Flint Hills Trail extends 117 miles across five counties in eastern Kansas, of which 95 miles are open and transversable. It follows the rail-banked corridor of the former Missouri Pacific Railroad, which was discontinued in the 1980s. Today, this trail is the longest rail-trail in Kansas. The Kansas Department of Transport...ation (KDOT) collaborated with the Kanza Rail-Trails Conservancy (KRTC) in 2013 to begin construction of the trail. The Kansas Legislature officially established the trail as a state park in 2018. The Flint Hills Trail covers a variety of ecological and geological along its route. Travelling west from Osawatomie in Miami County out to Council Grove in Morris County, millions of years of geologic time pass beneath your feet. The eastern half of the trail sits atop the Carboniferous System, exposing rocks that are 299 to 359 million years old. In these counties, you will find rocks that formed during cycles of shallow seas, swamps, and river channels, resulting in deposits of limestone, sandstones and shales. In Eastern Franklin County, the trail follows alongside the Marais Des Cygnes River. Here, you will see recent alluvial deposits from the migrating river such as unconsolidated clays, silts, sands, and gravels. When you enter Lyon County and continue west into Morris County, you enter into the Permian System, exposing rocks that are 299 to 252 million years old. These rocks were formed during cycles of shallow seas, tidal flats, and dry lands, resulting in deposits of limestone, shales, sandstones, and evaporates like gypsum. Along the western half of the trail, you cross into the Flint Hills Uplands region. This region includes the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, which is one of the few remaining native tallgrass prairie ecosystems in the world. Photos include a trail map (provided by the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism), a generalized geologic map of Kansas with the approximate location of the trail outlined in red (map edited from KGS), and an aerial shot of the Flint Hills Trail where it crosses over the 2nd Street dam in Ottawa, Kansas (photo by Alan Peterson, KGS). #GeoKansas #ksgeology #exploreKansas #KansasHistory #FranklinCounty #railroads #PomonaKS #OttawaKS #MiamiCounty #OsageCounty #MorrisCounty #LyonCounty #CouncilGroveKS #AdmireKS #BushongKS #RantoulKS #OsawtomieKS #OsageCItyKS
