Fall brought about a change of residence for Wampanoag people. After the crops of corn, beans, and squash were harvested, they would be dried, packed in large woven bags or baskets, and buried in deep pits in the ground. Once this work was finished, the family would move inland, away from their coastal summer home to their bark-covered winter wetu (house) to live, protected from harsh winds, until springtime. #Wampanoag #Patuxet #17thcentury #IndigenousPeoplesDay #wetu

Try a traditional taste of Historic Patuxet at home by making boiled bread - one of the ways Wampanoag people would make bread out of cornmeal. 1 quart slightly boiled water 1/2 cup cornmeal* 1/2 cup corn flour... 1/2 cup dried cranberries, blueberries, and/or currants 1/2 cup crushed nuts or seeds (walnuts, hazelnuts or sunflower seeds) Maple syrup or sugar to taste (optional) Combine all ingredients except the water in large bowl and mix thoroughly. After mixing, slowly add the water a spoonful at a time. When the mix is thick enough to be sticky, shape round patties about three inches in diameter and half an inch thick. Return the water to slight rolling boil and drop in 1 or 2 patties at a time, carefully making sure they do not stick to the bottom. Your bread is cooked when it begins to float. * We recommend our very own organic cornmeal from the Plimoth Grist Mill, which you can find at our shops in person and online at http://plimoth.com/. #Wampanoag #Patuxet #17thcentury #IndigenousPeoplesDay #PlimothGristMill

Since October is National Archaeology Month, let us begin our online Indigenous People's Weekend by virtually visiting our latest exhibit, "History In A New Light: Illuminating the Archaeology." Currently on view in the museum's Visitor Center, this is the first major exhibit showing artifacts from the Wampanoag Village of Patuxet and the site of the original 1620 English colony. Join our curator, Dr. Jade Luiz, on this virtual tour -- and come see this powerful exhibit in ...person while it is on view! https://www.youtube.com/watch #archaeology #17thcentury #patuxet #IndigenousPeoplesDay #Wampanoag
