Today we have some more photos from our archive to share with you all! The first image we have today is of a group of men, supposedly from the Engine Turnery in 1948. Unfortunately there is no further information on who these men were, but if anyone recognizes who they are, do let us know down below in the comments! The second image we have to share is of some Garrett workers hard at work in the Lathe and Milling Shop, facing West. This shop was located in the No. 1 Shop Engi...ne Turnery, in the Main Works. Ben Woodeson Maybe, Maybe; love 2020 Series of eighty-three digital prints on acid free matte photo paper 185mm x 185mm... Made specifically for MOCA London, Ben Woodeson’s Maybe, Maybe series continues the artist’s interest in what he terms the #CrucialInstant, moments and situations whereby everyday catalysts have the potential to cause momentous happenings, or alternatively, not The works quietly celebrate otherwise banal urban disruptions, eulogizing their individual possibilities. Irrespective of their potential consequences, like natural phenomena, they are neither good or evil, they just are The series consists of eighty-three unique images and a concrete poetry video piece developed during the pandemic lockdown of 2020. As work on the series progressed in tandem with the UK’s strict lockdown and social distancing, Ben Woodeson found that even deliveries of mundane cleaning products had the ability to improve the mood of his day. Realizing that post and parcels were all the external stimulation that many people were getting, Woodeson decided to give away an entire iteration of the Maybe, Maybe print series. He raided his contacts list and social media and posted eighty unique prints across the world. Throughout October we're marking Black History Month by high-lighting collections and great stories held by Oldham Local Studies and Archives. In this week's Remember When? we're taking a look at the fight to end apartheid. The Oldham Anti-apartheid Group was set up in 1986. It was just one branch of the international network which was established to inform people about the systemised segregation and oppression of black people in South Africa. It was affiliated nationally to ...the Anti-apartheid Movement and worked in conjunction with other local groups. Our collections hold the archives of this group along with a selection of objects such as badges, tee-shirts and a banner. They were donated to us in 1994 after free elections were held in South Africa and the group made the decision to disband. This photograph records an event held at the Glodwick West Indian Club. A painter, a poet and a child in a single frame and guess who's the only one who knows where the camera is! In the lead up to our #OnlineExhibition on #Chittaprosad in collaboration with Victoria Memorial, Kolkata, let's take a closer look at some lesser known aspects of his life. . As we flip through his personal letters and testimonials by friends, we realize that Chittaprosad greatly valued many of his friendships that were founded on shared views on art, people and poli...tics. His close ties with Danish poet, Erik Stinus resulted in a number of collaborative projects, and in this candid photograph we see the two friends simultaneously distracted from the lens by something happening off-frame. . A touching example of their camaraderie can be found in their scribbles on a card Chittaprosad had sent Stinus on New Year's Day, 1966, showing a flock of birds flying over a river. Inspired by the print, Stinus wrote a poem on it and produced it as a greeting card, a copy of which reached Chittaprosad in 1967. The latter, in turn, jotted down on the same card a translation of his friend’s poem! . Lance corporal James C. Farley, mans a M-60 machine gun during a mission. Da Nang, Vietnam March 31 1965... The concept of the door gunner originated during the Vietnam War, when helicopters were first used in combat in large numbers. The original personnel who served as early door gunners in Vietnam, were enlisted men, with a designated and specially trained crew chief serving as both the aircraft's maintenance manager and a door gunner. Later, as the war progressed, the door gunner position sometimes used a non-aviation rated/trained soldier or marine, that volunteered for door gunner duties. According to popular legend, the door gunner on a Vietnam era Gunship had a life-span of 5 minutes.
