For today's #libraryspotlight We’re shining a spotlight on our photo-book collection at SNMA! These books contain visual documentation of LGBTQ+ culture throughout history. Pictured here are:... Gay Gotham: Art and Underground Culture in New York by Donald Albrecht This book brought to life the queer creative networks that sprang up in the city across the 20th centurya series of artistic subcultures whose radical ideas had lasting effects on the mainstream. Peeling back the layers of New York’s LGBT life that thrived even in the shadows, this groundbreaking exhibition revealed an often-hidden side of the history of New York City and celebrated the power of artistic collaboration to transcend oppression. Some Faggy Gestures by Henrik Olesen Through the appropriation of source images and contextual shifts not dissimilar to the method invented by Aby Warburgfor his "Mnemosyne Atlas," Henrik Olesen probes the associations between homosexuality and its criminalization in the past, as well as in the present. Men at WWII: Fighting With Ease by Evan Bachner This collection features disarmingly winsome and playful pictures of sailors and soldiers at leisure, displaying an innocent affection for each other that is practically unthinkable today. This was a time when men had no reservations about showing their devotion to their comrades through physical contact, and the included photographs are truly snapshots of a lost era. SNMA is proud to carry these titles among our vast collection! Our library is open and available to the public! . . . . @hohanian #lgbt #lgbtqhistory #queerhistory #queeringhistory #pride #lgbtqia #lgbtqbooks #queerreads #Pridehistory #Gayhistory #Lesbianhistory #queerarchives #queerperiodicals

Today’s #archivespotlight at SNMA SNMA collects queer periodicals, artwork, posters, buttons and more to share with the community! Today we are proud to share our collection of Out and Proud Gay Dolls! Featured here are: Gay Bob... Released in 1977, he was invented by Harvey Rosenberg (who reportedly did not identify as gay). Gay Bob has been described as the world’s first gay doll. Gay Bob had an earring, fashionable leather bag, and a plastic penis (as opposed to the plastic mounds that characterize most dolls today!) Gay Bob’s packaging included a cardboard closet with a clothing catalog. Printed on the box was a manifesto reading: Hi Boys, Girls, and Grownups... I’m Gay Bob the world’s first gay doll. I bet you are wondering why I come packed in a closet. Coming out of the closet is an expression which means that you admit the truth about yourself, and are no longer ashamed of what you are. Gay people use the expression coming out of the closet to explain they are no longer afraid, or ashamed, of being gay, and no longer hide the fact. Billy Doll Created by artist John Mckitterick in 1997, the Billy doll was originally part of limited collection of 1,200 dolls created to benefit an AIDS charity. Billy was mass marketed after the entire first lot sold out in a matter of days, and was marketed as the first out and proud gay doll. Billy was 13 inches tall and was introduced in a number of versions, many based upon stereotypical gay characters of the time. SNMA currently possess Cowboy Billy. Billy stopped being manufactured in 2001. If you’d like to learn more about these dolls, check out these articles below! https://www.huffpost.com/entry/gay-bob-doll_n_7117120 http://www.back2stonewall.com/20//lgbt-flashback-1997.html . . . . @hohanian #lgbt #lgbtqhistory #queerhistory #queeringhistory #pride #lgbtqia #lgbtqbooks #queerreads #Pridehistory #Gayhistory #Lesbianhistory #queerarchives #queerperiodicals
