A 5th century version of Pliny the Elder's Natural History (books 11-15), which was in some aspects similar to an encyclopedia with its breath of information conveyed and is fascinating to read today to better understand many aspects of the Roman world and scientific knowledge. This one is the oldest version of the work known to be in existence. The first 10 books were published in 77 AD and the rest after Pliny's death resulting from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. It... was written on animal skins (parchment) and written over in roughly 700 AD with a different text: Jerome’s Commentary on Ecclesiastes. Pliny's Latin text in smaller letters can be seen in the blue chemical smears (used to bring out erased text) on the right hand side. The text of Jerome was written in Luxeuil minuscule (a medieval latin script originating in Burgundy, France distinguished by its long and thin letters).
