Ernest Rutherford, one of the fathers of nuclear physics, was born #onthisday in 1871. These remarkably candid snapshots of Rutherford #inourcollection were taken on board ship while he was travelling to Australia in 1914 for the British Association for the Advancement of Science meeting. They are among the few photographs of him as a relatively young man (he was 42 at the time). Offering a rare opportunity to see one of the great figures of modern physics in a more casual s...etting (at a time when academia was very formal in its manners and dress code), Rutherford is captured chatting with his colleagues and enjoying deck sports; in two, he even has his shirt-sleeves rolled up. At a time of increasing specialisation, the long sea voyage brought British scientists together in a relaxed atmosphere and forged relationships which might not otherwise have happened. Behind the camera is Oxford chemist N. V. Sidgwick, whose improbable ship-board friendship with Rutherford had a profound effect on his career and scientific work. From being an Oxford tutor with a local reputation, Sidgwick later became an important theoretical chemist and wrote several very influential works. http://www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/object/inv/25486 http://www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/object/inv/26192 http://www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/object/inv/34685 http://www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/object/inv/94495 http://www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/object/inv/99484 #museumfromhome #scienceunlocked #rutherford #historyofscience #histsci #histstm #sciencehistory #historyofsciencemuseum #historyofsciencemuseumoxford #science #scientists #scicomm #sciencecomm #physics #nuclearphysics #physicist #photographyhistory #oxford #oxforduniversity #universitymuseum #20C #twentiethcentury #universityofmanchester

Day 3 of Space Week: It's a good day to talk about the International Space Station and maintaining orbit. The ISS is one of the coolest satellites in the sky. This wonderful tin can of science is home to six scientists from all over the planet, and they orbit around the Earth every 90 minutes.... The ISS is close enough to the Earth, that it constantly gets pulled closer, meaning that without intervention, it would burn as it fell through the atmosphere towards our surface. To counteract this, The ISS gets a small boost from other space crafts to maintain its orbit. This system has worked for around two decades! Once an object begins to satellite around a bigger object, it has three options: 1- Spiral closer and eventually hit the surface 2- Establish a stable orbit and become an official satellite 3- Escape the gravity pull and drift away in a new direction #spaceweek #worldspaceweek #worldspaceweek20 #space #science #Clarkplanetarium #saltlakespace #utahisrad #saltlakecity #satellite #saltlake #orbit #lookup #astronomy #scienceiscool #scienceforkids

Happy #FossilFriday! When we go explore the Mesozoic sedimentary rocks of Nevada there are two types of animals which we always find remains of! The most common are turtles, the second most common are crocodiles. Here we have a portion of a small crocodile which cruised the riverways and lakes of northern Nye and southern Eureka counties 100 million years ago during the Cretaceous. Alongside these crocs we have found armored dinosaurs, little bi-pedal plant eating dinosaurs, ...iguanodonts, sauropods, raptors, and some dinosaurs which we are still digging up. Dinosaurs roamed Nevada and crocodiles patrolled Nevada waterways. This story preserved in the rocks of the state and the story told by Nevada Science Center team members. Check out fossils and rocks from this part of Nevada during our upcoming no cost Virtual Field Trip: Dinosaurs of Nevada! Day 5 of good things that came from 2020 - because we still desperately need some good news! 2020 was a banner year for student research at CCNHM: research students published two different papers this year - the second and third such student publications from our program. One of these was published by Bailey Fallon, continuing her research on fossil leatherback sea turtles, and documented a large collection of isolated shell ossicles of these rare sea turtles from the Oligo...cene Ashley and Chandler Bridge formations near Charleston, based on collections made mostly by local amateur collectors who donated the specimens to CCNHM (and a few found by the Boesseneckers). The paper was published this month in the journal Acta Palaeontologica Polonica. The other publication was on a small billfish rostrum, initially studied by Nathan McCuen and Aika Ishimori in Dr. Boessenecker's Applied Paleontology course. The specimen was identified as the extinct swordfish Xiphiorhynchus cf. aegyptiacus - clarifying that two species of Xiphiorhynchus are known from the Oligocene of Charleston, one with a relatively flattened sword-like bill. This specimen was also donated. The article was published this summer in the journal Vertebrate Anatomy Morphology Paleontology (VAMP). And, very recent good news: a third student research manuscript by Addie Miller, Charleston Museum natural history curator Matthew Gibson, and Dr. Boessenecker was just submitted for peer review this morning!
