It's Wednesday! That means it's time for another Collections Spotlight! The two objects we have to share today may be considered minor, but are just as interesting nonetheless! They are two badges for different trade unions that were set up in the Richard Garrett Works. The first badge is for the Amalgamated Society of Machinists & Woodcutting (quite a long-winded name!), and the second badge is for the Boiler Makers Union.... For the first badge, we will have to do some digging through our archives for further information on the Society... However, for the second badge, the Boiler Makers Union, we have already posted information on the Union in a previous old photos post! The third image is of the Leiston Boiler Makers Union in 1913, 107 years ago! What we know on the Union is that they were a trade union of employees who worked at Garretts. They looked after the interests of the employees at work when it came to big decisions being made to do with their roles within the company, so it was a good group to be a part of! The men within the Union would have most likely had a badge such as the one pictured, to show that they were a member of the Union. Interesting stuff, isn't it? Bakhor street is the oldest street in Lhasa. It is circumambulation circuit around the Jokhang Temple, which is the most sacred shrine of Tibet. Bakhor basically means street blocks surrounding Jokhang Temple. Apart from its spiritual value, the street also became main market. There is old saying in Tibetan that there is nothing you cannot find in Bakhor. Bakhor street is still very popular and considered as must-visit place in Lhasa because of it’s rich cultural and historical charm.
