On this day in submarine history, USS Swordfish (SS-193) made the first attack by the U.S. Submarine Force against the Empire of Japan. She fired a torpedo and hit a Japanese merchant ship 150 miles west of Manilla, Phillipines. She had been in port in Manilla on December 7th during the Pearl Harbor attack. She departed the next day for her first war patrol off Hainan China. For more information please visit Naval History and Heritage Command ship history on Swordfish: htt...ps://www.history.navy.mil//sh/danfs/s/sword-fish-i.html #submarines #WWII #torpedo #December9th #December9

Today marks the 79th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on Dec. 7, 1941. The next day the United States formally entered WWII. #rememberpearlharbor Here is a sampling from the Athenaeum's collection of souvenir ribbons for submarine launchings that occurred at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard afterward. During WWII, nearly 25,000 civilians worked at the navy yard where over 70 submarines were built. All six of the submarines featured on these ribbons w...ere assigned to the Pacific Theater with four of the ships surviving the war. Unfortunately, the USS Cisco and her crew sunk in late September 1943, and the USS Capelin and her crew disappeared without a trace after Dec. 2, 1943. Now a U.S. National Historical Landmark, the USS Bowfin is owned and operated by the Pacific Fleet Submarine Memorial Association as a museum in Pearl Harbor. The ship is also a memorial honoring the 52 submarines and over 3,500 submariners lost in WWII.
