This San Anselmo P.T.A. Cook Book has a dedication inside that reads: Affectionately Dedicated to the American Child by the San Anselmo Main School Parent-Teacher Association which is part of a national organization consisting of 550,000 members whose activities are devoted solely to Child Welfare. On a national level, the PTA is the oldest and largest volunteer association working exclusively on behalf of all children and youth. For more than 120 years, this organization has promoted the education, health and safety of children, youth, and families. In the late 1800s, the United States was feeling the impact of the Industrial Revolution with a large number of children working in factories, mines and in the streets which left them unable to attend school or have enough to eat. On February 17, 1897, Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst held a meeting in Washington D.C. and more than 2,000 men and women attended and the National Congress of Mothers was formed. Alice McLellan Birney had appealed to all mankind and to all womankind, regardless of race, color, or condition, to recognize that the republic’s greatest work is to save the children. To address those students in segregated states, Selena Sloan Butler founded the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers, and later, the two PTAs formally merged in 1970.
