Good evening, folks. We apologise profusely for the late post, but today is a special day. Today is National Purple Heart Day, where we recognize and honor those men and women of the US Military, who, in times of war were wounded in action, ... Or who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in defense of our freedoms. And it means a great deal as we recognize the 75th Anniversary of the end of World War 2 in Europe and The Pacific. The Purple Heart is the oldest medal still awarded to o...ur Servicemembers, dating back to 1782, and first issued by General George Washington himself. (His image is on the current Medal). The medal is retroactive to April 5th, 1917, the day before we declared war on imperial Germany and entered World War 1. However, the medal as we know it today was first issued on February 22nd, 1932. Sadly, accurate records of its presentation and awarding were not kept initially, and there are probably far more out there the the official known tally.. of some 1.8 Million that have been awarded, many posthumously. Ladies and Gentlemen, our freedoms are not cheap, and each Purple Heart is a reflection of one story of the price that has been paid to maintain and preserve them. Good evening, everyone. 75 Years Ago Today - (Saturday) July 28th, 1945: Lost in heavy fog, a B-25 Mitchell, a twin-engined medium bomber of the US Army Air Force, crashes into the Empire State Building in Manhattan, NY City. The flight had left from Bedford Army Airfield (present day Hanscom Air Force Base) in Massachusetts, and was enroute to Newark Airport in New Jersey. ... The aircraft hit the north side of the building between the 78th and 80th floors. Both crewmen, Lieutenant Colonel William F. Smith, Jr and Staff Sergeant Christopher Domitrovich, were killed instantly, as a was a passenger on the B-25 - US Navy Aviation Machinists Mate Albert Perna, who, tragically, was enroute to his home in New York City to be with his parents for a memorial service for his brother Anthony, who had been killed on the USS Luce when she was sunk by Japanese suicide planes on May 7th in the Pacific. Along with the three servicemen, 11 other people in the building were killed. Despite the damage, New York City Firefighters brought the fire under control quickly, and a majority of the building was reopened for business on Monday the 30th. 75 Years Ago, Today... #onthisdayinhistory World War 2 is not over. In Europe, Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy are gone. In the Pacific, Okinawa has fallen, and the Allies are on Japan's doorstep. The noose is tightening on the last member of The Axis, but the Imperial Japanese refuse to capitulate. Reflecting on three and a half years of savage jungle fighting and unspeakable casualties against the Japanese, the Allies are faced with the sober reality that they will have to invade the Japanese H...ome Islands to end the war. Projected casualty estimates are beyond comprehension, but there is no alternative.. or is there? 75 Years Ago Today - (Monday) July 16th, 1945... The world enters the Atomic Age with the successful test detonation of a nuclear weapon in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Under the strictest secrecy, the United States Government's "Manhattan Project" develops a plutonium-based weapon, which gives an explosive yield of 19 Kilotons, or roughly 20,000 TONS of high explosives. A new threshold has been crossed, and there will be no turning back from it... 75 Years Ago Today... Good evening, everyone. As promised, here is our post: WAACs no more!! #onthisday (Thursday) July 1st, 1943: The "Women's Auxiliary Army Corps" (WAAC) is gone. Per official orders, they are officially now the "Womens Army Corps." No longer considered "Auxiliaries," the women serving in the US Army are given Active Duty status, and have the same ranks, privilege - and pay - of their male counterparts.... In this amazing and inspiring photo, taken that sam summer,, we see one of Fort Hancock's newly-minted WAC's proudly painting out the Extra "A" on the sign for Barracks 25 as one of her sisters-in-arms looks on. This is the large Barracks that is closest to the Sandy Hook Lighthouse. The WAC doing the painting is in a light summer uniform, while her compatriot wears her Khaki Service Uniform, with Tie, and the distinctive "Hobby Hat." What's a Hobby Hat, you ask? Don't worry - we'll cover all that, and more, with an in-depth post on Fort Hancock's WAC's tomorrow! 77 Years Ago, Today!! 75 Years Ago, Today - (Monday) July 30th, 1945 In one of World War 2's greatest tragedies, the USS Indianapolis (CA-35), a Portland-Class Heavy Cruiser of the US Navy, is torpedoed and sunk by the Imperial Japanese Navy Submarine I-58. She was returning from one of the War's most secret missions - delivering the components of the Atomic Bomb "Little Boy" to Tinian Island, in preparation for deployment of the weapon on Japan. Her next destination was to be the Philippine Islan...ds. Breaking in two, she sank in 12 minutes. No distress signals were received by Allied vessels or shore installations, and due to negligence, was not listed as missing. Out of a ship's compliment of 1,195 men, some 900 men escaped into the sea, including the ship's commander, Captain Charles B. McVay III. For nearly four days, the survivors were plagued by tropical heat, dehydration, exposure to fuel oil, hysteria, delirium, suicide...... and the largest mass shark attack in human history. On August 2nd, when rescue aircraft and ships finally discovered the survivors, only 316 of the 900 men were still alive. Court-Martialed by the Navy (despite the Japanese Submarine Commander testifying that there was no way Indianapolis could have evaded him), and plagued by the guilt placed on him, Capt. McVay commited suicide on November 8th, 1968. He was fully exonerated, and his record posthumously cleared, in 2001. The loss of the ship and the shark attack also prominently plays out in a dramatic scene in the movie "JAWS" After years of fruitless searching, USS Indianapolis was finally located by underwater expedition on August 17th, 2017. 75 Years Ago, Today.... #saytheirnames Photo: PubDom #njhistory #njisntboring #visitmonmouth #supportnjlocal #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #jerseycollective #journeythroughjersey #onlyinnewjersey #njspots #centraljerseyexists #coastaljerseyadventures #discovernj #yesnj #just_newjersey #njisbeautiful #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #forthancock #ww2 #battleoftheatlantic #coastartillery #historymatters #thisplacematters #jerseyshore #abomb #ussindianapolis #sharkattack @ Fort Hancock, New Jersey
