147 years ago today, Amelia Edwards arrived in Cairo. This journey up the Nile would conclude with a fascinating and intriguing account of her time there. Edwar...ds was just one of many significant female travel writers venturing to Egypt. There are plenty more to discover. Edwards was also an artist; her drawings, sketches, and paintings all played their part in her narrative. Her sketch of the sphinx and the pyramids is accompanied by this passage: A little way southward, from the midst of a sandy hollow, rises the head of the Sphinx. Older than the Pyramids, older than history (p. 490, A Thousand Miles Up The Nile). Her travelogue consisted of *seventy illustrations by Edwards herself. These visual illustrations were Edwards’ impressions of Egypt, as if viewing these stunning sights though her own eyes. A coffee at the Museum Canova Tadolini with @quidmeliusroma2019! Incredible 19th century atmosphere in this bistrot which was the atelier where Canova lived and... executed numerous commissions. At he peak of his career, Canova left his atelier to his most promising pupil, Adamo Tadolini, to preserve his heritage but also to continue his work as a sculptor. From 1818 until 1967 four generations of sculptors belonging to the Tadolini family worked here.
