We have another student spotlight today. This one is on Kara Larson, one of our first year students. "My name is Kara Larson, and this is my first year as a PhD student at UMMAA. Broadly, I hope to study how Early Bronze Age urbanization in the Levant (ca. 3300-2000 BCE) impacted peripheral herd management strategies and dietary subsistence among people living in marginal environments, and how the rise of urban economies leads to shifts in social networks and intra-regional c...omplexity. To answer these questions, I will use isotopic analyses and zooarchaeology to look at the diet and mobility of animals, along with the people who herded them. As an incoming student, once I heard about UMMAA’s manifesto regarding the BLM movement, I immediately wanted to get involved. I joined a several working groups to contribute to the collective UMMAA initiatives. The recent events surrounding the BLM movement truly opened my eyes to the racial privilege and racism intertwined in all facets of our daily lives. I will no longer be silent nor complicit in the face of injustice and will actively be an anti-racist in all elements of my scholarship, teaching, and livelihood. Fun Fact: I will be getting married next summer to the love of my life, Jim Strawn - an archaeology PhD student at the University of Georgia. I’m also a first-generation scholar, and I’m obsessed with my black cat, Salem." Applying History to Current Day Challenges! Harvard Professor Lizabeth Cohen will discuss the role history can play in informing current battles over Confederate War monuments and public policies to address racial tensions and the challenges facing our nation’s urban centers in a Concord Museum Forum on Monday, October 19, 2020 at 7:00 pm. Professor Cohen will have a conversation on how a well-informed historical perspective can equip us to revisit public memorials, monuments..., and exhibits: to address mounting racial tensions; and to develop effective public policy. Professor Cohen will also discuss her newest book, "Saving America’s Cities: Ed Logue and the Struggle to Renew Urban America in the Suburban Age", which recently won the prestigious Bancroft Prize in American History, and how the lessons learned from urban renewal efforts in the 1960’s and 1970’s can be applied to the challenges we face today.
