We’re very pleased to hear that Te Hap o Ngti Wheke’s proposals to Ng Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa / The New Zealand Geographic Board to restore significant Mori place names throughout Te Ptaka-o-Rkaihaut / Banks Peninsula and Whakaraup / Lyttelton Harbour have been approved recently! These place names will receive official recognition and legal status alongside their European equivalents - Te Rnanga o Ngi Tahu. Eugenie Sage, Minister for Land Information adds to this: R...estoring traditional Rpaki place names alongside English place names recognises the history and significance of these places. The placenames will henceforth be known as: Aua / King Billy Island Kaitangata / Mansons Peninsula mawete / Coopers Knob rongomai / Cass Peak Pukeatua / Dyers Pass Tapuwaeharuru / Evans Pass Te Ahi-a-Tamatea (was Rapaki Rock) Te Heru-o-Kahukura / Sugarloaf Te Moenga-o-Wheke / The Tors Te Piaka / Adderley Head Te Tihi-o-Kahukura / Castle Rock (was Tihiokahukura / Castle Rock) Te Rpaki-o-Te Rakiwhakaputa (was Rapaki) Te Upoko-o-Kur / Witch Hill The way of holding our place in the land and in our memory, is in our place names. - T Tipene O’Regan, at the announcement at Rpaki Marae.
