USS Cairo 1862 Photographed in the Mississippi River area during 1862, with a boat alongside her port bow, crewmen on deck and other river steamers in the background. Cairo was the lead ship of the City-class gunboats and named for Cairo, Illinois. In June 1862, she captured the Confederate garrison of Fort Pillow on the Mississippi, enabling Union forces to occupy Memphis. As part of the Yazoo Pass Expedition, she was sunk on 12 December 1862, while clearing mines for the at...tack on Haines Bluff. Cairo was the first ship ever to be sunk by a mine remotely detonated by hand. The remains of Cairo can be viewed at Vicksburg National Military Park with a museum of its weapons and naval stores. The idea of a flying machine that one can drive dates back further to the nineteenth centurythe concept was first patented in 1910. Russian soldiers with an improvised dummy head Eastern Front 1915... Thanks to @ww1photos_info for the request! Dummy heads or dummy soldiers were used by the warring nations to deceive enemy soldiers, especially snipers, into shooting at it and potentially expose their position. They were first deployed by French soldiers in the winter of 1914, and the other armies followed suit. This particular Russian dummy head has been made of straw, but more sophisticated, better resembling ones of papier-mâché were also manufactured at factories on the home fronts by the warring nations. Once issued to frontline soldiers a wooden stick would be attached to the dummy head, with which a soldier could raise or lower the dummy above or below the parapet of the trench. If the dummy was hit by a sniper, creating a hole in the front and in the back, the soldier manning the dummy would pull it down.
