This book I worked with the Chatham OGS to get to print. The book was published by the Algonquin Society in the 1920's. This particular book never made it to ...print. We decided the information was too good not to get it into the public. As you read this book you will notice some of the language cannot be used to. I have approval from the local history society's of concern, to leave it in because it is history and teaches those about the language. In the first volume of this series, Canadian Achievement in the Province of Ontario, (Vol.1): The Detroit River District, we learned about the achievements of Essex/Detroit from 1701 to 1812. The book can be purchased under the title, Ontario and the Detroit Frontier 1701-1814. In this volume (vol.2): we learn about the achievements in expansion, in Kent County from 1701 to 1920. The third book in the series, Sault Ste. Marie Yearbook, 1937, which teaches us about The Northwest Company Amherstburg/Detroit, opening the Sault Saint Marie area, and the effects of the railroad coming through. This book can now be purchased under the title: Sault Ste. Marie 1787-2017 Founders: Northwest Fur Trade Company. Rev. Hugh Cowan was in the top five in the history community of Ontario and part of the original Algonquin Society of Ontario. This society now operates out of Southern Ontario as: The Algonquin Society of Windsor/Detroit. Only the best historians of the day get invited to join this prestigious club. The information is very good and new to current historians. The early life of the people in Kent County was primitive even by the standards of the day. Log cabins, farm and settlement clearing were started. A few towns were set up for various reasons; ferry docks, warehousing, mills for various products, military communities as well as settlements for our loyal Native Indians. Communities for the people of colour soon followed. In 1792, when the Longwood road was surveyed the team noticed pockets of petroleum oil in a few areas along the route. This and many more facts will wake you up to the concerns of the time. Some new information has been found, since the book was written, that may alter a few facts. Because of this you may want to check out other, more current, resources for projects. Gal or Galleries was the term for the column written to send to the editor. Once all galleries were approved the book was written. Please remember the era it was written in. As mentioned, this book was never completed. We had the Cowan family contact everyone they knew associated with the family and no copies were found. The book, in rough form was presented to the Chatham Central library in 1963. This copy, we decided, we would share the way we have it. Enjoy, Chris Carter, Tour Essex Group, 2019 This book sells for $35. As a fund raiser for the Chatham/Kent OGS. They are located in the main Chatham Library. The book is sold in Chatham at the Book Brothers on King St. W.

I received this request on the Essex County Branch of Ontario Ancestors webpage, can anyone help? "I am writing from Ottawa and am hoping someone can help me. I... am looking for information on Irene Bland (perhaps Brown could be a married name). November 13 1929 - 2003 Ottawa. I was told she was born/lived in Windsor. Apparently her parents were from England and had an amazing English garden that was somewhat of an attraction in the Windsor area. She might have attended an all girls school." See more

Chatham-Kent's early history. Rev. Hugh Cowan, early horseback minister in Ontario, documented the early history of the area and the people. Rev. Cowan planned ...to publish his works but that never happened. The only copy of his gallery proof was housed at the Chatham-Kent Public Library. A descendant of Rev. Cowan reached out to have the book published and with the assistance of author Chris Carter we published the 398-page book last December. The book sold out!! We have printed another batch just in time for Christmas. If you missed out last year or are interested in very early Kent County history, this book is a must. You can purchase your copy right on our website or email us at kent@ogs.on.ca to make arrangements. Books can be picked up in Chatham or shipped. $35.00 per copy (plus shipping). Feature of the Week: Louisa Payne was a resident of Fairplay community (Baseline & 9th Conc.) She escaped as a slave with her parents from the USA. They built a log house on the 9th Conc. and she lived there until she died in 1937. Louisa was well known and well loved in the community.

Did you know this?????

I am calling for Jarvis Street, named for a slaveholding family in early York, to be renamed after the Blackburns. Thornton and Lucie fled Kentucky slavery and ...started Toronto's first taxi business. They contributed to the antislavery cause, and helped many freedom-seekers start new lives. It was courageous, hard-working people like the Blackburns who helped built Toronto as we know it today. Their story is told in my book, "I've Got a Home in Glory Land: A Lost Tale of the Underground Railroad," published in 2007 See more
