History can be preserved in many different ways. Mary Maxwell chose to capture a small portion of American Civil War history in her autograph book. Check out Historical Interpreter Ben Crim’s blog post on this unique item from the Travellers Rest collection. https://historictravellersrest.org/mary-maxwells-autograph/ #historictravellersrest #historichousemuseum

What does Washington Irving’s 1820 short story entitled The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and a Travellers Rest coverlet have in common? The coverlet is made of a material called linsey-woolsey which is a plain woven fabric with a linen warp and a woollen weft. Irving mentions linsey-woolsey in this quote from the spooky tale when Ichabod enters the center hall of the mansion and he describes what he sees, . . . in one corner a huge bag of wool, ready to be spun; in another, a quantity of linsey-woolsey just from the loom.
