The Wyndham and Districts Historical Society has been accepted as a registered charity to be added to the list of charities that farmers can nominate when they purchase fertiliser from PGG Wrightson and Ballance. There is no additional cost to the farmer but in a Covid year when we couldn’t plan events to fundraise this will be a huge help as we try to rebuild our local museum

The Historical Society had an enjoyable lunch yesterday at the Tumu Toka Curioscape at Curio Bay and Paul Duffy proudly showed us round the interactive centre afterwards. It was great and we recommend a trip down there soon. We also awarded life memberships to Ray and Roxann Beange who have both given long and enthusiastic service to the Museum and the Historical Society. We thank them for their contribution, Ray particularly as handyman for the museum building and as treasurer and Roxann as past secretary. Both also contributed greatly at committee level.

Wyndham and Districts Historical Society is thrilled to advise that we have been successful with all three of our recent applications for funding. These will all be completed by Christmas. Lottery Environment and Heritage has granted $15,375 for a Feasibility Study to be completed by expert John Coster from Tauranga. It is an independent report looking at the financial viability of providing a suitable building to house and display the collection. John will also determine if ...a museum is needed, identify and assess the viability of the options available and also report on whether a museum can be viable into the future. John Coster will also conduct a planning workshop thanks to a grant of $3,410 from the Southland Regional Heritage Committee. This will clarify what a replacement museum will look like and how we get there. The Community Initiatives Fund has granted $2,500 towards a Conservators Report which will be completed by Laurence Le Ber, one of our ARK curators. He will prepare a comprehensive report on the state and significance of our collection and this will be included in any later applications for funding towards a replacement museum building. Clearly we would be treading water if these applications had not been successful and the Heritage Society is really appreciative of this support. When we applied we were asked if we had the support of the community and the answer was simple, look at how the locals have put their hands in their pockets! So thank you again for making the answer to that question easy.
