Hi it’s Ashley again and I would like to wish all of you a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival. Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated this year on October 1st. I chose to do my final project on the Mid-Autumn Festival because it is an incredibly important celebration to appreciate the full moon and end of the summer harvest. To show thanks and appreciation, friends and family gift mooncakes and presents to colleagues and loved ones prior to the day. On the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival,... many families reunite for dinner, admire the full moon, and eat delicious mooncakes. The roundness of the full moon symbolizes the complete gathering of a family. In my family, we celebrate the night by visiting my grandparents’ house and sharing the ultimate feast my grandma prepares for everyone. I always look forward to savoring succulent roast duck and fresh vegetables. Towards the end of the night, we would gather around to try all different kinds of mooncakes and rate which one was the most delicious. Although it’s tough to get together this year, that connection and bond is especially important. Hi everyone, Ashley Lee here again! Today I want to talk about a dim sum and Hong Kong style cafe staple the pineapple bun! Pineapple buns are special to me because it’s the first food that ignited my grandpa to share stories about the time he lived in Hong Kong. Growing up in California, I often associated eating pineapple buns with dim sum restaurants. I was genuinely confused when my grandpa ordered one when we were at a Hong Kong style cafe. I was even more shocked... when the restaurant served it with butter because I usually experience it filled with custard or BBQ pork. My grandpa said his favorite way to eat a pineapple bun is with the thick slab of butter. He explained that it was essential that the bun was hot and the butter was cold so that the butter was slightly melted when you bite into it. He passed down this preference onto his children and grandchildren. Nothing makes me happier than knowing I’m able to experience the same foods my grandparents had back in Hong Kong. Having been an intern at the museum for a month now, I’ve come to realize how vital personal stories are to the exhibits and collections as it gives life to each item. I’m grateful I can find so much joy when eating pineapple buns. . . . Grace Doringo is an intern at the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum for the 2020-2021 school year. She is currently a junior at Walsh University majoring in Museum Studies and History with a minor in Art History. At Walsh, Grace is a participant in the honors program, student government, the Museum Engagement Team, and choir. CHSA looks forward to working alongside younger advocates of our mission! Introducing Qilu Zhou, CHSA's Design intern! Qilu is currently studying Graphic Design at the California College of Arts. As part of our team, she is involved in CHSA's Chinese American Historical Anniversary project, researching on key events in Chinese American history and will be designing infographics for our social media. As a Chinese student in San Francisco, Qilu notes that Chinatown's community... made her reminiscent of her hometown in China. From the spoken dialect she'd hear to the familiar foods she'd often find, Qilu eventually found great interest in the Chinese American experience, wanting to contribute in preserving the history of Chinese people in America in her own way. In her spare time Qilu, who describes herself as always curious about new things, has an interest in the arts from painting to photography. She is also fan of attending live concerts.
